Steve Jansen

Steve Jansen is a Texas-based experimentalist (and not Steve Jansen, the drummer from Japan!) whose musical pursuits focus on tape manipulation, alto saxophone, and electric guitar. Jansen has traveled extensively throughout Africa, Latin America, Europe, and across the States to unearth sound, and these recordings play a significant role in his unique sonic constructions. Jansen has toured with John Wiese (Sissy Spacek), Mike Majkowski and performed/collaborated with Rob Mazurek, Henry Kaiser, Jeph Jerman, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Jamison Williams, The Home of Easy Credit, Tim Daisy, James Fella, Chris Cogburn, Damon Smith, Sandy Ewen, and Whoopi Pupi. In May, Danish label El Paraiso released an LP by Black Cube Marriage, an ensemble led by Rob Mazurek that includes Jansen as a “special guest.”

Catherine Lamb - composition

Catherine Lamb (b. 1982, Olympia, Wa, U.S.), is a composer exploring the interaction of elemental tonal material and the variations in presence between shades and beings in a room. She has been studying and composing music since a young age. Her family growing up traveled extensively, allowing her to listen to differing sounds and approaches. In 2003 she turned away from the conservatory in an attempt to understand the structures and intonations within Hindustani Classical Music, later finding Mani Kaul in 2006 who was directly connected to Zia Mohiuddin Dagar and whose philosophical approach to sound became important to her. She studied (experimental) composition at the California Institute of the Arts (2004-2006) under James Tenney and Michael Pisaro, who were both integral influences. It was there also that she began her work into the area of Just Intonation, which became a clear way to investigate the interaction of tones and ever-fluctuating shades, where these interactions in and of them-selves became structural elements in her work. Since then she has written various ensemble pieces (at times with liminal electronic portions) and continues to go further into elemental territories, through various kinds of research, collaboration, and practice (herself as a violist). She received her MFA from the Milton Avery School of Fine Arts at Bard College in 2012 and is currently residing in Berlin, Germany.

5 YEARS OF RAW TONK RECORDS
London based record label Raw Tonk Records celebrates five years of existence with a series of events, including an all-day mini-festival at Cappelens Forslag in Oslo.

A number of artists from the label will be performing, pulled from the diverse fringes of improvised music and free jazz across the UK and Europe. Many of the artists performing will form unique collaborations especially for the festival.

RIPSAW CATFISH
Ripsaw Catfish is the collaborative duo of Cath Roberts (baritone saxophone) and Anton Hunter(guitar). Their music employs a collection of pre-composed elements which can then be drawn upon, or not, during the course of an improvisation. The Manchester and London-based musicians started meeting in 2013 and released their debut album ‘For The Benefit Of The Tape’ in 2014.
